Wild Flag- The First Female Supergroup

Well… I must say it’s about time. Everyone is always going on and on about supergroups. Some of them are cool and others, well let’s say they never should have happened. The original supergroups included Cream, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Blind Faith and other notable ones have come and gone but recently, supergroups have seriously been lacking. Not that I don’t enjoy seeing Mick Jagger jump around in a pink suit while singing with Joss Stone and Damien Marley in his new supergroup Superheavy…

Yet here we are in 2011 and for the first time, an all female supergroup has emerged. Wild Flag is composed of Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timothy, and Janet Weiss. These women have been members of Sleater-Kinney, The Minders, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Helium, and Quasi. Sleater-Kinney formed in 1996 and was grouped into the riot grrrl movement but was maybe the only to be enjoyed by a larger hipster audience.

Wild Flag released their debut album Wild Flag in September and so far it has been well received. The album opens with the song “Romance” which is upbeat and refreshing. Personally I’m amazed at how they have been categorized so far. A review in Pitchfork said they are “post-hardcore indie rock.” What the hell is that? Everyone is getting too scientific. Music can be categorized, so can groceries. What happened to enjoying the music that’s given to us? What needs to be focused on is the history these women have made.

“Boom,” a track from their album is one of the best rock songs I’ve heard in a long time. But who am I kidding? I loved every single song on the album. I think one of the things that sets apart great supergroups apart from just all of the others is that if you knew nothing about the band beforehand or any of the members it still stands out as a notable album. Wild Flag has created one of those outstanding albums.

These women are on tour now all over the country so be sure to check out their album and catch a show.

An avid rock musician and enthusiast as well as a rock history buff.
