Margaret Darling

This past week I had the privilege to meet Margaret Darling, guitarist and vocalist of the Seedy Seeds. The band came to CCM (the College Conservatory of Music) to perform on E-Media’s new program, Queen City Sessions. Before they performed I got to talk to the band and as a woman musician, of course I had a few questions for Margaret.

My main inquiry was: what does being a woman musician mean to you? She answered that growing up she had never really considered being a musician, although she was always a music fan. She said she just listened to the music that she liked. It wasn’t until she became a musician that she saw the separation between men and women musicians. Margaret started noticing the way she was treated by door guys and sound engineers. She says now she doesn’t even deal with them, she passes her requests for them through Mike or Joe, her band mates. While fighting for equality in the rock world is important, Margaret has found a different method that works for her. By ignoring these sexist men she is able to enjoy what she loves the most, the music.

I also asked what advice she had for aspiring musicians. “Know what you’re aspiring to” is what Margaret heeds. There are many different paths you can take as a musician and its important to be aware of this.

It was an absolute pleasure to be able to speak with Margaret Darling. Be sure to check bearcastradio.com because their performance video will be posted in the week to come!

An avid rock musician and enthusiast as well as a rock history buff.
