Andrew Jody (Barrence Whitfield & The Savages)-
“Nocturnal Emissions” by Shilpa Ray
“When I was asked to do this I had a hard time making a decision… because when thinking about musicians who’ve influenced me, I don’t consciously compartmentalize them into ‘female musicians’ and ‘male musicians.’ Ya either got it or ya don’t.
That being said, looking at the female artists that inspire me, I’ve noticed most of them don’t flaunt their sexuality superficially, but do make killer music from the perspective of their gender. A fine example of such an artist is Shilpa Ray.
With her 2015 album, Last Year’s Savage she has really honed her sound and songwriting. More cohesive and minimal than previous efforts. It’s hard to pick from tracks like ‘Sanitary iPad’ and ‘Johnny Thunders’ Fantasy Space Camp’ but I’ve decided on ‘Nocturnal Emissions.’ Her wit is at its finest on this one… speaking of the male perspective and gender roles, the song pretty much speaks for itself. “Dose of Forever” by Birdie Hearse
“Dose of Forever” by Birdie Hearse inspires me because the first time I ever heard the song it was stuck in my brain, and still is…not many songs have that impact on me. Also, it inspires me to write more catchy tunes before Birdie Hearse takes over the planet.”
Todd Uttley (Subsets)-
“Never Say Never” by Romeo Void
“With this being a Valentine’s Day special, I decided to go with a band that has influenced me since I was a teenager-Romeo Void. A band that was formed on Valentine’s Day in 1979! Debora Iyall fronted and defined what Romeo Void was to me- fuck what you think a band should look and sound like! The song, “Never Say Never” would automatically bring me to dancing, where I would go into a trance with closed eyes, dreaming that I had the confidence to talk to someone I was attracted to. I mean, hey, Debora was a big girl, I am a big guy- I felt like she was writing my theme songs and carrying the flag for someone who had dreams of performing and saying, “fuck you, I’m doing this” to the masses of judgmental twits that the world of paper thin dolls had created. I had read later that Romeo Void’s record company approached her about losing weight and she told them, “no way” so, they dropped all support of the band. Fuck that record company noise! I hope they all choked on fake palm trees and caviar dreams! Anyway, here is my contribution to spreading the knowledge of female rock icons that have and still are kicking ass! Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone!”

“Drunken Angel” by Lucinda Williams
“I chose Lucinda Williams as someone that inspires me, she put out her first album in 1977 and still tours constantly now. I also was able to do a couple tours with her, and hang out with her and my bandmates after the shows and have a glass of wine and talk. We played a honky tonk in Flores, Texas and people did country dancing to her music, I thought that was cool. Her music is smart and comforting to me now.”
Brad Schnittger (The Sundresses)-
“I pick Nina Simone. I was introduced to her music by my band mate, Jeremy Springstreet when The Sundresses were first starting out. I remember being so amazed at the power of her music, and later, after reading her autobiography, equally amazed at her life story. Her intensity is awesome and probably unequaled.”

“Sunshine and Ecstasy” by Tom Tom Club
“I saw Tina Weymouth when The Tom Tom Club played Midpoint in 2010, I watched through the fence in the back cause I couldn’t afford it. The energy she gave off was unreal and her bass lines were even better. She is an inspiration to any musician anywhere whether they be male or female. She’s also an original member of The Talking Heads.”
Mark Dunbar (Mark Zero & The Cavemanagers)-
“Baby Take It All” by Inez and Charlie Foxx
“There’s a lot of great women who rock but this is one of my favorite singers’ songs. I really think this song is amazing and I wanted to pick a song that is amazing which is not too common. I think this song should have been a big hit. This artist is inspiring to me.”
