    Women in Rocktail

Rocktail Nights are hosted by two very talented Women in Rock, Kristen Kreft and MayaLou Banatwala. Rocktails take place at The Listing Loon in Cincinnati, Ohio every Second Saturday. In addition, they’re starting to team up with The American Sign Museum for some fun summer events to be shared soon! Kristen Kreft plays guitar and sings in The Perfect Children, a fabulously rockin’ retro vibin’ band. Kristen is also singing with The Brian Olive Band for live shows. She bartends Friday nights at Madeira Inn. Her favorite drink is a Rye Old Fashioned made with sugar cubes and bitters (no muddled fruit for her!). You can check out The Perfect…

Just before Thanksgiving, in some magnificent wrinkle in rock-legend timespace, these four smiled, a camera went click!, and The Best Instagram Picture Ever was created.

It’s Oh So Noisy: The Icelandic Punk Museum (Pönksafn Íslands)

You don’t walk into Pönksafn Íslands; you descend into it. The new Icelandic Punk Museum in Reykjavík is located in a former public toilet: 0 Bankastræti in the city centre.   As I descend into Pönksafn Íslands on my second day in Reykjavík, curator and famous Icelandic punk Svarti Álfur Mánason is rocking out, noisily and messily, at the bottom of the graffiti-covered steps, his pink spiked hair the first thing I see. He apologizes for his messy riffing, welcomes me to the museum and tells me I can play any of the instruments and put on any of the clothes in the place. “Go in order,” he advises. “And…

Venus Flytrap Needs You!! And You Need To Know About This…

You know what’s a worthy cause? Supporting entertainment that has women to the front ruling their own worlds! Let me introduce you to Venus Flytrap, a rad web series about Women in Rock. It tells the story of a female punk band in a world run by the enemy (ahem, Mr. Trump). It is a queer-centric comedy promoting the strength of punk women. Venus Flytrap is made by Zami Girl Stories, written and directed by Adele Bertei and produced by Natalie Hill. “Have you watched VINYL, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, THE GET DOWN, ROADIES or THE MIGHTY BOOSH? What is missing in these shows? Why are the women always groupies, roadies, singing girl-group…

A Conversation with Shannon Shaw of Shannon And The Clams.

It was at a basement show that I first met Shannon Shaw of Shannon And The Clams. Now, a couple years into their career, Shannon stands strong as a talented songwriter, role model, and golden-hearted icon of all that’s good, fun, and colorful in rock culture. The band has become well known across the international garage rock circuit, affiliates with Burger Records, and released their latest album “Gone by the Dawn” this year — an instant classic blend of heartthrob rhythms and Shannon’s signature husky vocal deliveries. You can watch a documentary about the album here. I was able to catch back up with Shannon at Ace of Cups (a Columbus, Ohio…

    Hi, I’m Francis

Ever since I remember; there’s been rock-n-roll. Music is the first thing my cognitive mind latched onto. I’m a child of the seventies and a teenager of the eighties. Punk rock once saved my life. What I dug about punk was that it was outsider art. Most importantly it broke down the star/audience paradigm that created the rock star/groupie mentality that made rock music such a sexist-boys club through much of its history. In the late eighties I was introduced to the D.I.Y. punk scene through a group called The Dayton Anarchist Collective. It was a scene that was fairly woman centric. (In fact we spent a lot of time arguing…

    Hi! I’m Theresa.

And I’m your newest contributor to Women in Rock. I was born during a fierce Cleveland blizzard, but I came out of my mother’s body silent as church, and staring. Found my way out like I was supposed to, easily, headfirst, right into the cold. No problem. I was just over six pounds, exactly the length of a Kleenex box. The doctor expected me to cry; I waited him out. Or perhaps I was just listening, waiting to hear what life was all about, already attuned to the music of the world. I’ve been listening all my life. I grew up during the ‘80s and ‘90s. My first 45 record…

Top Cincinnati Women in Rock Moments for 2015

This year was really great for female musicians in Cincinnati, Ohio. It seems like the ratio of men/women musicians is finally starting to even out. Roxie and I compiled a list of our favorite and most exciting events that took place in Cincinnati featuring seriously talented Women in Rock. 1. The Comet in Northside designates an artist in residence each month to host weekly shows for the entire month. The role typically features new bands in Cincinnati and thrusts them into the spotlight among peers and enthusiasts alike. In 10 out of the 12 months this year, bands with females in them were chosen to be the venue’s artist in…
