Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries: A Grrrl Band Who Understands

Take one listen to Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries’ eponymous album (released November 9 and produced by Alice Bag), with its playful synthesizers and insistent guitar and drums, and vulnerability will not be the first thing to come to mind. Take another listen, however, and you’ll realize that this is a grrrl band who understands. What do they understand? Panic attacks, for one thing: the opening track, “Panic Attack,” is an homage to anxiety in all its unpredictable terror. “I’m a weirdo, I’m a weirdo, I’m a weirdo, I’m a weirdo” captures the repetitive bully that is a negative thought that will not go away. They understand fear in…

Venus Flytrap Needs You!! And You Need To Know About This…

You know what’s a worthy cause? Supporting entertainment that has women to the front ruling their own worlds! Let me introduce you to Venus Flytrap, a rad web series about Women in Rock. It tells the story of a female punk band in a world run by the enemy (ahem, Mr. Trump). It is a queer-centric comedy promoting the strength of punk women. Venus Flytrap is made by Zami Girl Stories, written and directed by Adele Bertei and produced by Natalie Hill. “Have you watched VINYL, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, THE GET DOWN, ROADIES or THE MIGHTY BOOSH? What is missing in these shows? Why are the women always groupies, roadies, singing girl-group…

    In the Know- May 2017

May’s In the Know is a question for the greatest multitaskers, moms who are musicians! Happy Mother’s Day! The question is: How has being a musician enhanced your ability to be a parent? Patricia Morrison (The Bags, The Gun Club, Sisters of Mercy, The Damned, Legal Weapon)- I understand toddler behaviour after being in bands. Kind of weird how similar a four year old is to a musician. Anyone with a 2 year old knows they believe the world rotates around them. Very self motivated and a tantrum here and there. Both need strong boundaries, and to learn the word ‘no’. Emily started with the violin and viola then the…

    “Bat Thing” by Castration Squad

Happy Halloween, my little spooky friends! In honor of this dark day, today’s song of the moment is “Bat Thing” by my favorite deathrock band, Castration Squad.  Castration Squad was a lovely group of ghouls from California featuring Shannon Wilhelm (vocals), Mary Bat-Thing (vocals), Tiffany Kennedy (keyboards), Alice Bag (bass), Tracy Lea (guitar) and Elissa Bello (drums). And… it was quite the supergroup! Mary Bat Thing went on to be Dinah Cancer of 45 Grave and we all know and love Alice Bag (our Women in Rock issue 001 covergirl). Also, Elissa Bello had a brief stint drumming in the Go-Go’s. Check out their rendition of “Wild Thing.” They’ve altered the…

Cover Girl 001: An Interview with Alice Bag

It is beyond an honor to have Alice Bag as our cover woman for issue #001 of Women in Rock. She is a lifelong feminist who perfectly represents the strongest Women in Rock.   Growing up in a home with an abusive father drove Alice towards feminism. “I smiled whenever someone challenged him,” Alice says. However, she didn’t truly become aware of feminism until the famous battle-of-the-sexes tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. As a teen, Alice was a huge fan of glam rock, although her influences started with ranchera and soul music. Later in high school, she started forming her first band with Patricia Morrison…
