I was hanging out with a group of friends the other night and Dylan put on a Spotify goth mix. I just happened to be lucky enough to get introduced to this band, Vampire Beach Babes. Their song, “Gothmobile” beyond tickled me. A mix of The B-52’s and The Cramps, I was immediately intrigued. They are from Toronto and are self pro-claimed “gothabilly.” “Gothmobile” may just be your new theme song when you’re driving around in your super cool hearse (don’t we wish).

Delta 5: One of the Greatest Bands You Probably Never Heard
The Little Slice of History below is provided courtesy of our special guest contributor, Francis Pospisil, a rocker himself with deep roots in the D.I.Y. scene and in promoting work by the women he admires. -Roxie The other day some of the ladies from Women In Rock were having coffee and working on the blog in our kitchen. Izzi had on a Gang of Four T-shirt and I felt compelled to ask her if she’d heard of Delta 5. She hadn’t, but luckily I own a copy of their only LP. I threw it on the turntable and it was then that they asked me to write for them. Delta…

“Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell
So I went on vacation this past week to visit my grandmother who’s a tiny, vivacious, spectacular and witty 90-year-old that lives in a 55+ community in the suburbs of a beautiful coastal tourist destination on the Florida side of the Gulf of Mexico. Being the savvy internet user that I am, I managed to score a fantastically affordable and decently located rental house for my partner and myself right across the street from the ocean. Burning hot sun rays, overstuffed tourists (present company included), watered-down marked-up cocktails, salty wet air, gorgeous nights on the beach wondering what the slimy thing was that just crawled over our toes in high…

Top Cincinnati Women in Rock Moments for 2015
This year was really great for female musicians in Cincinnati, Ohio. It seems like the ratio of men/women musicians is finally starting to even out. Roxie and I compiled a list of our favorite and most exciting events that took place in Cincinnati featuring seriously talented Women in Rock. 1. The Comet in Northside designates an artist in residence each month to host weekly shows for the entire month. The role typically features new bands in Cincinnati and thrusts them into the spotlight among peers and enthusiasts alike. In 10 out of the 12 months this year, bands with females in them were chosen to be the venue’s artist in…

Women in Rock Christmas Playlist
I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of Christmas music. I mean how many different versions of the same song can you do? And how many times can I take hearing the same 10 songs over and over again throughout the season? However, these Women in Rock help rid me of my Grinchiness and into the holiday spirit. “Blue Holiday” by The Shirelles– Okay, so maybe not the cheeriest holiday song but damn, it’s great! It’s a song I would want to hear at my favorite diner, Blue Jay, while drinking a cup of coffee and watching snow fall outside. “Merry Christmas Baby” by…

What Corin Tucker and Other Women in Rock Want For Christmas!
I did a quick poll to see what Women in Rock want for Christmas. Here are some last minute ideas of what to get your rockin’ gal! –Hey, Sleater-Kinney fan boys and girls! Corin Tucker says she would like any of the Electro Harmonix pedals. –Ava Roberts of Black Planet and Sour Ground would like a Big Muff Pedal. Okay, I’m seeing a theme… Electro Harmonix pedals are the way to go if you’re going to buy your gal a pedal. –Emily Hagihara of Ancient Warfare would like a drum sampling pad so she can incorporate “more textural elements” to her band. –Jen Shagawat of Shellshag would like 5a Natural Pro…

“Porcelain” by The Pretenders
Being hungover is one of my least favorite feelings. The Pretenders are one of my favorite bands. Their song “Porcelain” is something that always gets me through being hungover. The song appeared on the B-side of “Message of Love” released in 1981. It has a great instrumental intro that I will simply describe as swinging. When Chrissie Hynde’s sexy yet soothing voice comes in, you can be assured that your hangover will subside and you will start feeling better, or at least you’ll feel some sympathy. She talks of her knees on the tile floor and busting her head on the porcelain, a place I’ve been before laying on the…

An Interview with Laura Dolan of Electric Citizen
Laura Dolan has been cool from the start. Maybe not an obvious cool that would have been appreciated by high schoolers wanting to go to the mall but a badass, legitimate cool that has led to where she is now as frontwoman of Electric Citizen. I met up with Laura at the cozy and hip bar, The Listing Loon to have a long overdue interview. That’s where I learned that while she got her start in music 5 or 6 years ago singing in bands, Laura was always “a ham” growing up. When she was little, her mom took her to the Taft Theatre and she pointed at the stage and…
