    Introducing… AVID NOISE!

Have you wondered where I’ve been lately? Why I haven’t been posting as much? Well, I am beyond excited to introduce to you AVID NOISE!!!! Along with being obsessed with music, I love vintage clothes. I’m quite a clothes horse, I must admit and realized I had some great things I wasn’t wearing. I thought, maybe I should start selling these clothes. Well I also love Etsy. I decided I would open my own vintage store on Etsy but I wanted to do something different. I’ve always wanted to tie Women in Rock into some business aspect and never could decide what venture that would be. Then it hit me….…

Shilpa Ray…The #1 Reason to go out on a Monday Night

When I first heard Shilpa Ray, I was the music director for UC’s student radio station, Bearcast. The perk of the position was getting new music sent to you daily. A lot of it was bad, a lot of it I was indifferent to, but sometimes a gem fell into my lap. Shilpa Ray was the best gem of my entire 3 year stint as music director. The CD that was sent to me on some rainy Monday was Shilpa Ray’s Teenage and Torture. I loved the cover, I decided to give it a listen. I was definitely not ready for what I heard. Rock and roll with melancholy and yet so…

Double song of the week: Metric and Berlin, 2 Bands You’d Like

I’m a big fan of the 1st Wave station on Sirius XM radio. It was through 1st Wave that I first heard the song “The Metro” by Berlin and I was immediately hooked. There was something so catchy about the song yet it was slightly dark. And at once, I thought of Metric. So, if you’re a fan of Berlin and don’t know Metric, here’s some info. And vice versa! Berlin is a new wave band that was formed in LA in 1978 and features the fabulous Terri Nunn. Berlin is a true synthpop band and is still around today. They released an album in 2013 called Animal. “The Metro” was…

Song of the Week: “Microwave On” by Branes

In the past I’ve written quite a bit about Wazu, now called Vows. I adore them because their sound is what I’d like to call New Goth Wave, something I’ll write more about at a later date. It seems I have a new favorite New Goth Wave band and they’re called Branes. Branes is a Burger Records band based in L.A. Honestly, I haven’t been so excited about a band’s sound in a long time. They describe themselves as “batcave,” which can only mean greatness. Anyway, I’m a bit behind. Their album “Perfection Condition” was released back in 2012. But hey, better late than never. So check out their song…

    10 Creepy Songs for Halloween

Since Halloween is just days away and the creepy spirit is in the air, I thought it was an appropriate time to compile some of my favorite spooky songs. This list really does stem from my love for goth and dark music. With that being said, most of these songs are great year round when you feel like being dark and creepy! I did throw in a few Halloween gems though to get you ready for a night of tricks. 10. “Councillor” by Wazu– First of all, Wazu recently changed their band name to Vows. Anyway, do you like to get your goth on? Planning on wearing some huge boots…

Kelly Thomas: Feminism, Strength and Equality expressed through Not Just One More Girl On A Stage

By: Roxie Conquistador ‘You know,’ she tells me, ‘I realize that I have a talent for pushing people to share what’s inside, to connect with their potential and project it.’ I’m sitting, standing, walking, running errands, sharing a pretzel, sharing a beer and sharing thoughts with Kelly Thomas; and already I’m more motivated. She’s a teacher, a fantastic mom, an organizer, a devoted advocate for the community and a talented musician with three projects of her own: an acoustic act, Kelly Thomas and the Fabulous Pickups, and the loveable Tammy Whynots. She was a driving force behind the Rivertown Music Club which benefited many of the region’s musicians and charities…

    RIOT REVIEWS!

I was lucky enough to attend Riot Fest in Chicago this weekend and saw some extremely legendary Women in Rock as well as some newer acts! It was a three day music overload and I loved every minute of it… except for the nonstop rain on Sunday. Nonetheless, it was an amazing time. Here are some brief show reviews of the Women in Rock at Riot Fest! DAY 1: Joan Jett & the Blackhearts– Joan Jett played to an amazingly packed crowd of people. She still looks great and sounds great and is as enthusiatic as ever. The Blackhearts played all their hits including, “Cherry Bomb,” “Bad Reputation,” “I Love…

Song of the Week: “Optimist” by Those Darlins

Those Darlins have undergone a lot of changes since they were a small quirky alternative country band. First, Kelley Anderson left the band after their last album, Screws Get Loose, in 2012. The band has been touring extensively and developing a fuller, more rock n’ roll sound, loosing their twangy edge. However, their new single “Optimist” is pretty great. Jesse Darlin’s voice still has a Southern drawl, making their music distinctive and unique. Their new album, Blur the Lines is due out on October 1st. Listen to their single, “Optimist,” here!
