A Midwest Love Story- An Interview with SERVICE

Months ago, I got to spend 24 hours with Jilly Weiss and Russell Simins at their home in Indianapolis. It’s the perfect midwest home with an unbelievable garden, lots of pink flamingos, a record collection I would die for and their adorable elderly cat, Armani. Jilly and Russell met like so many musicians have before but their connection is something magic. They first met in 2013 when We Are Hex and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion played a few shows together. Then, in 2015, the bands went on tour and Jilly and Russell fell in love. “It took awhile but we found a way to be together,” says Jilly. “The first…

We Are Hex Members Form New Band

I was hanging at the Northside Rock n’ Roll Carnival this weekend when I saw Jilly from We Are Hex with a posse of dark rockers fly past me. I grabbed her with excitement and said, “What are you doing here?!” I was very upset when We Are Hex broke up the last time but never to fear, Jilly is in a new cool band called Service (name might be temporary). The band is a five piece that draws some similarities to We Are Hex but is a fuller, more rock n’ roll sounding band! I don’t have too many details to report at this time but I loved Service.…

Song of the Week: “W.D.M.R.S.” by We Are Hex

It’s seem like an appropriate week for “W.D.M.R.S” by We Are Hex to be the song of the week seeing as they’ll be playing at Black Plastic this Saturday, March 14th (although Friday the 13th would be a more fitting date for them). W.D.M.R.S is off of their most recent 45 and last time I saw We Are Hex, frontwoman, Jilly, told me all about the awesome song that features Jinx Dawson of Coven. Completely coincidentally, Jinx Dawson was recording at the same space after their session and Jilly asked if she would be up for adding some vocals to the beginning of the song. She agreed and the end…

    10 Creepy Songs for Halloween

Since Halloween is just days away and the creepy spirit is in the air, I thought it was an appropriate time to compile some of my favorite spooky songs. This list really does stem from my love for goth and dark music. With that being said, most of these songs are great year round when you feel like being dark and creepy! I did throw in a few Halloween gems though to get you ready for a night of tricks. 10. “Councillor” by Wazu– First of all, Wazu recently changed their band name to Vows. Anyway, do you like to get your goth on? Planning on wearing some huge boots…

Jilly Weiss on the rebirth of We Are Hex

We Are Hex are back in action in a big way. Since their reformation this past winter, they have big plans for the summer. Last June, I ran into Jilly Weiss, lead singer of We Are Hex at the Black Belles‘ show at the Comet. When I spoke with her, she was working on a new project. We agreed to do a Women in Rock interview to talk about the changes in her life. Well, a year later its finally happened and We Are Hex have reformed! Here’s what Jilly has to say about the rebirth:   IK: When did We Are Hex originally form? JW: I have the world’s worst…

Song of the Week: “Lewd Nudie Animals” by We Are Hex

It is with great excitement that we post the first song from We Are Hex since their breakup in 2011 . The song of the week is “Lewd Nudie Animals” which can be found on their bandcamp here. This past Saturday, We Are Hex played at the Comet and despite lead singer, Jilly, not feeling well the band put on a great show. And they return darker than ever. In “Lewd Nudie Animals” Jilly proclaims, “I’ve never wrote a love song and I won’t start now.” We look forward to more new music from the four piece from Indianapolis. Check back here soon, an interview with Jilly will be posted in…
