Oh Susanna recently released a new album, A Girl In Teen City. The Canadian songstress, Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Susanna) has used A Girl In Teen City to tell the story of a teenage girl growing up in Vancouver in the 1980s. The album explores common teenage escapades... falling in love, getting drunk, cruising around town, attending rock shows, loss and teenage heartache.

“Zenobia” by Veseria
Veseria is a band that hails from Indianapolis, Indiana. “Zenobia” is a single off their third studio album, RLTVTY, out July 29th on Romanus Records. This track definitely reminds me of Shilpa Ray from Her Happy Hooker days. It’s an awesome driving rock n’ roll song that shows off frontwoman, Jen’s, super strong vocals. “Zenobia” is a very catchy and intrigues me to listen to the rest of the album. Veseria is made up of husband and wife duo, Jen and Patrick Roberts as well as bandmates, Cory Lusk and Kyle Perkon. The band started in 2010 and as adorably enough, their first show was at Jen and Patrick’s wedding reception! The cool thing…

Meet Adele Bertei, The Woman Behind Venus Flytrap
I just wrote about the extremely cool series in the works, Venus Flytrap and they need our help to make it happen! The Indiegogo fundraiser has less than 20 days left. Venus Flytrap is a feminist comedy series about a punk band, with a star studded cast. I got the chance to learn more about the creator, writer and director of Venus Flytrap, Adele Bertei. What a badass!!! Here’s what she had to say about playing music and creating the show. Izzi Krombholz: How did you get your start playing music? Adele Bertei: Peter Laughner of Pere Ubu heard me sing at a bar in Cleveland and asked me to be in a band…

Venus Flytrap Needs You!! And You Need To Know About This…
You know what’s a worthy cause? Supporting entertainment that has women to the front ruling their own worlds! Let me introduce you to Venus Flytrap, a rad web series about Women in Rock. It tells the story of a female punk band in a world run by the enemy (ahem, Mr. Trump). It is a queer-centric comedy promoting the strength of punk women. Venus Flytrap is made by Zami Girl Stories, written and directed by Adele Bertei and produced by Natalie Hill. “Have you watched VINYL, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, THE GET DOWN, ROADIES or THE MIGHTY BOOSH? What is missing in these shows? Why are the women always groupies, roadies, singing girl-group…

In the Know- May 2017
May’s In the Know is a question for the greatest multitaskers, moms who are musicians! Happy Mother’s Day! The question is: How has being a musician enhanced your ability to be a parent? Patricia Morrison (The Bags, The Gun Club, Sisters of Mercy, The Damned, Legal Weapon)- I understand toddler behaviour after being in bands. Kind of weird how similar a four year old is to a musician. Anyone with a 2 year old knows they believe the world rotates around them. Very self motivated and a tantrum here and there. Both need strong boundaries, and to learn the word ‘no’. Emily started with the violin and viola then the…

An Indie Pop Dream; An Interview with Ruby the Rabbitfoot
When I spoke with Ruby, she had just completed a performance on Adult Swim for Stupid Morning Bullshit. The band did a special performance of “You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain. With the 2016 release of Divorce Party, it’s safe to say that big things are on the way for the charming, Ruby the Rabbitfoot. Originally from Georgia, Ruby’s grandmother had a piano so she was curious and drawn to music as a child. “When I got kind of serious was when I was 14 and my best friend wrote a song… it blew my mind that she could take a guitar and use three chords and write a song and…

“What’s Her Name?” by Smoking Martha
It’s amazing how my music taste changes with the seasons. In the winter, I’m all doom and gloom but as soon as it’s nice outside I want to listen to catchier more upbeat tunes. The second single by Smoking Martha definitely takes me back to summers when I was in high school. “What’s Her Name?” is slightly reminiscent of Gwen Stefani/No Doubt or The Vincent Black Shadow, the right amount of heavy riffs with pop quality vocals. Smoking Martha of Brisbane, Australia is fronted by the dynamic Tasha D. Their debut album, In Deep, will be released at the end of May . This band has already toured with big names…

An Interview with the Original Bad Girl, Cherry Vanilla
Cherry Vanilla is one of the most iconic bad girls of the 1960’s. She started out as a creative on Mad Ave, worked as a DJ in NYC and Europe, acted in Warhol’s play, Pork, did PR for David Bowie and had her own band, all while having crazy sexcapades and doing lots of drugs along the way. You can read all about it in her 2010 autobiography, Lick Me. In the meantime, here are some questions I had for Cherry Vanilla after reading Lick Me. Izzi Krombholz- What was being a creative in the Mad Ave. days like? Were people sexist towards you, especially since you weren’t a…

An Interview with Joe Klug from Wussy
We had the opportunity to sit down with Joe Klug, the drummer from Wussy, and ask him about his work with Cincinnati’s most beloved indie band, the role of indie music, and being a stay-at-home dad. How did you get your start playing with Wussy? Some years ago there was a benefit at the old Southgate House (I believe it was for Donna Jay’s dog “Bunny”) where there were like fifteen to twenty bands, and we all had to play one song that had something to do with a dog. I was playing in Staggering Statistics at the time, and Lisa Walker walked up to me and said: “Our drummer’s…
